Comforting phrases
- “I’m really sorry you’re going through this.” 
- “How can I be helpful to you?” 
- “Do you want me to bring you some food? What is your favorite food?” 
- “What you just shared with me was so heartfelt and I really appreciate you opening up to me in this way.” 
What NOT to say
- “Everything will be OK.” 
- “Time heals all wounds.” 
- “Perhaps you could learn something from this.” 
- Avoid sentences that start with “at least” because it may feel like you are trying to find the good in the situation, which can be agitating.
